The 3D PDF Consortium has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an international standards developer and has assumed the role of Secretariat and U.S. TAG Administrator for ISO TC 171 SC 2. This standards committee is responsible for developing and maintaining international standards related to document file formats, electronic data management systems (EDMS) and authenticity of information. The committee’s work includes the PDF, PDF/E (engineering), PDF/A (archival) and PDF/UA (universal accessibility) standards.
The 3D PDF Consortium is also assuming responsibility for the administration of the EDMS standards developed in the ISO committee. This is an exciting new role for the Consortium, which will benefit not only the PDF community but also members of the Consortium.
It has been a long time coming. Version 2.0 of the PDF ISO Standard (ISO 32000:2) has been released and is available for download. This version of the PDF standard is important for engineering as it adds PRC as a format for 3D data. The PDF Association and ISO both have written informative articles on the new version:
“The ability to view, share and use 3D CAD models is essential to NSAM successfully fulfilling the Advanced Manufacturing functions of its charter. This new partnership with the 3D PDF Consortium will provide NSAM with access to leaders in the industry and enable more effective engagement across the digital enterprise” said Paul Huang, the Navy Program Officer for the Naval Shipbuilding & Advanced Manufacturing Center.

“Validation is one of the key technologies in the manufacturing world to meet MBD/MBE demands. 3D PDF allows easy and robust viewing of 3D CAD models without CAD licenses and presents great potential to serve as a standard format for validation reports” said Annalise Suzuki, Director of Technology and Engagement of Elysium Americas.

Our 2017 Annual Meeting will be held September 18th to capitalize on several of our members attending GPDIS in Phoenix. 3D PDF Consortium members are invited to join us from 9:00am MDT to 11:00am MDT in the Ocotillo B Room of the Arizona Grand Resort and SPA.
September 18, 2017, 11am – 12pm MDT
Following our annual meeting, we open our doors to all GPDIS attendees interested in learning more about 3D PDF and the 3D PDF Consortium. We plan to have an open discussion about attendees’ document needs and explore how 3D PDF and the 3D PDF Consortium can help.
The Users Meeting will immediately follow our annual meeting in the same Ocotillo B Room.
Please contact Executive Director Jerry McFeeters for additional details or meeting link for those not attending in person.

The 3D PDF Consortium will be a Silver Sponsor for this PDF Association event, which is designed to provide valuable information to mid and upper management levels that are involved with PDF.
New to this year’s event will be three sessions on how 3D PDF can be integrated throughout the enterprise to make information dissemination safe, secure, and readily accessible to all partners in the enterprise. The 3D PDF Consortium and our new member, ATI, will both be presenting. The following sessions specific to 3D PDF are being planned:
- Archiving Engineering Content using 3D PDF (3D PDF Consortium)
- Results of DLA demonstration on the use of 3D PDF in the design and manufacturing of antiquated parts (ATI)
- Acrobat and 3D PDF (Adobe)
September 18-21, 2017
If you plan to attend the 2017 GPDIS meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, look for many of the 3D PDF Consortium member representatives who are also attending from Elysium, Anark, Aras Corp., ITI, PROSTEP, and Theorem Solutions.
