PDF ISO Week – Fall 2017
November 27 - November 30
Twice a year, the ISO TC 171 SC 2 working groups responsible for the PDF standards meet in person for a week to develop the PDF document standards. The fall meeting will take place at the Adobe offices in San Jose, California. As Secretariat and US TAG Administrator to TC 171 SC 2, the 3D PDF Consortium organizes and runs this week long event.
PDF (ISO 32000)
PDF 2.0 work was completed at the end of 2016 and the standard was published earlier this year. The PDF working group will review all questions and feature requests that have been received against the PDF 2.0 publication.
PDF/E (ISO 24517)
The most recent version of the PDF for engineering standard (PDF/E-2) has been a long time coming. PDF/E-2 defines a version of the PDF standard that is suitable for archiving of engineering documents. This version is compatible with the recently published PDF 2.0 specification and adds the PRC data format (ISO 14739) as a normative 3D data stream. During PDF week, the PDF working group (WG8) will review the current Draft International Standard (DIS) ballot and hopefully send it forward as a final draft (FDIS) or straight to publication.
XFDF (ISO 19444)
XFDF (XML Forms Data Format) files can be used to store AcroForm field data. This format was initially published as an ISO standard in December, 2016. The PDF working group (WG8) is developing the second part of this standard which adds “XFDF Definitions for Comments on 3D or Rich Media Annotations” to the standard.
ECMAScript and ECMAScript 3D for PDF (ISO 21757-1 and -2)
One of the most powerful tools available with PDF is ECMAScript. There are two separate sets of ECMAScript extensions that are specific to PDF files. The first deals with general PDF (ISO 21757-1) and the second with 3D (ISO 21757-2). The PDF working group (WG8) will be reviewing the results of the latest Committee Draft (CD).
PDF/A (ISO 19005)
The PDF/A working group (WG5) is currently developing the latest version of PDF/A (PDF for Long Term Preservation). This new version will be named PDF/A-4 and will be based on PDF-2 (ISO 32000-2). An exciting new development in PDF/A-4 is the addition of conformance levels to the standard. These conformance levels can be used to specify domain specific extensions to the base requirements. One conformance class has already been proposed for AcroForm files and the U.S. TAG will be proposing another for long term preservation of engineering documents.
PDF/UA (ISO 14289)
The PDF/UA working group (WG9) will review the current Committee Draft (CD) of PDF/UA-2.
